Searching for the Past is among many that relate to my adoption. This has a duality concept where a part is happy with the blessed life and the other screams in anguish looking for what might have been.
I used a few different types of applications as this piece developed. The purpose was to differentiate the two characters in the work. I used a soft, almost invisible yellow for the background and faded it into the water in the background. It stood alone for a while without the bars in front of it and I felt that is was missing something. The two characters in this piece were not relating to each other and I used the bars to connect them.
I enjoyed painting Searching for the Past. It was a special piece of surrealistic art from the start. I couldn't understand what it was until it was close to being finished.
