Red Pain

I began to use a lot of the mixed media that I use so often and began to experiment applying it in different technique. Always, the way the oil paint reacts to this thick media, is like a sponge. I apply the paint and it dries almost instantly.

With this painting, the surface was really hard to paint on. I couldn't make the paint 'flow' from the brush because the surface was just eating it up. Frustrated, and determined to cover this canvas with a base coat, I thinned out the paint and got a big brush. I started to coat it with red paint, and my mood at this point had something to do with the choice of color, I'm sure.

The horizontal lines and forms in this work were suggested by the texture of the mixed media. I began creating shadows and began to push and pull visually. Chiaroscuro, is the correct term for this.
