This painting has many, many paintings underneath it. I could never decide what I could do with such a rough canvas - the texture is really difficult to work with. My first step was to create a dark under painting. Next, I thinned out all the remaining colors that I had on my pallet from three other paintings II had in progress which then created this range of hues on the canvas. While it was still wet I put the horizontal lines across it and stopped right there. I realized that it was done.
The reason I titled the the Master Painting was after this work was completed I was walking around my house with a video camera because a friend of mine had asked me to show me the house. I walked into the Master Bedroom and was joking about objects in the room like the 'master' alarm clock, the master couch, the master light, and then the camera swung around to this piece that I hadn't title yet. Instantly I named it the Master Painting. It has stuck with me and it adds a great sense of humor to the work.
