I created this painting on my birthday. Typically, I layout things in odd numbers. In this painting I've used 4 objects and challenged myself to have the objects interact with each other enough to where the viewer wouldn't really be focusing on how many objects there were but what they were doing to and with each other.
One of the really fun attributes is that it doesn't have any gravity, a specific light source or any physical guidelines of having to be something. The viewer cannot look anything and associate it with a familiar object or place without reaching a little deeper within themselves. I enjoy the reaction of when they like it without being able to explain why. Another bonus of the attributes that is that you can hang thins painting any way you want to on the wall. When I was at the art store and looked at this canvas and saw how big it was, I laughed thinking of the wall space that it would take up. I had hoped that I would be inspired to hang this painting vertically I've got a lot of paintings on the walls in my home. I painted the background carefully using very warm colors and then polishing the paint to an incredible shine. In good light, you can see yourself from the surface of the paint. Nifty tricks! I hung it on the wall and stared at the background waiting for something to come out and I finally took the painting down because nothing was showing up. I knew I wanted to use a different application than the smooth surface but even that didn't loosen any creative thought.
I've included the process that I often go through. You'd be surprised at the math that goes into this stuff. It's not easy to put four spheres the same distance from each other onto a big canvas like this. |
